6 trends in healthcare expenditures

A recent AMA report projects national healthcare expenditures grew 5.8 percent in 2015, and will likely continue to grow.

Here are six key statistics from the report:

1. Healthcare spending was logged at $3.2 trillion in 2015 — $9,990 per capita — which was a 5.2 percent growth over 2014.

2. Between 2008 and 2013, the average annual spending growth was 3.7 percent, but in 2014 and 2015 healthcare spending grew more rapidly due to ACA coverage expansions.

3. Hospital care and physician services were the leading personal healthcare spending categories; 32 percent of the spending, or around $1 trillion, was attributed to hospital services while 15.7 percent, or about $502.8 billion, was attributed to physician services.

4. In 2015, more people were able to access physician services and spending there jumped 6 percent as a result. However, when combining physician and clinical services, spending fell 1.1 percent.

5. Around 5.6 percent of healthcare spending was attributable to prescription drugs in 1990, but in 2015 that number jumped to 10.1 percent. New medicine and generic drug spending jumped in 2015.

6. In 2015, 10.5 percent of the healthcare spending was paid out-of-pocket, compared to 45 percent in 1965.
