6 Tips to Approach Patients Respectfully

A post on Kevin MD discusses how healthcare professionals can address patients more comfortably and appropriately.

While some find nicknames such as "honey" or "young lady" terms of endearment, others might take them as disrespectful. Here is how to make sure physicians get it right:

1. Start by calling patients by their first name and ask them what they prefer.
2. Use formal titles such as "Mr." or "Ms." When you are in doubt.
3. Check titles twice and be sure to note PhDs or religious affiliations that might make a difference, such as "Sister."
4. Ask about pronunciations before trying to say them.
5. Exercise sensitivity when discussing name changes in the case of marriage or divorce.
6. Double-check family names to learn preferred names.
