6 things to know about Pennsylvania ASC growth, earnings

A study conducted by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council has analyzed the state's ambulatory surgery market during 2013. Here are six things to know from the report.

1. The number of ASCs in the state increased by four in 2013.

2. Average revenue per ASC visit increased 4.8 percent to $1,084.

3. The state's ASCs reported 1.06 million visits and $1.1 billion in net revenue during fiscal year 2013.  In FY 2012, the state's ASCs reported 1.07 billion visits and $1.15 billion in net revenue.

4. Average ASC operating and total margins decreased statewide from FY 2012 to FY 2013. The average operating margin dropped from 25.75 percent to 24.94 percent and total margin dropped from 26.92 percent to 25.13 percent.

5. The number of procedures performed at the state's ASCs increased marginally at 0.5 percent.

6. Medicare and Medical Assistance covered 41.9 percent of ASC procedures during 2013, down from 43.9 percent in 2012.
