Researchers analyzed 2,797 U.S. ophthalmology resident case logs between 2009 and 2015.
Here are six key trends:
1. Ophthalmology residents’ caseload went from 143.8 phacoemulsification cataract surgery cases to 173.6 phacoemulsification cataract surgery cases.
2. For vitreous tap/inject procedures, the average number increased from 31.3 cases to 93.1 cases.
3. Ophthalmology residents’ caseloads increased from 4.5 glaucoma shunt surgeries to 6.7 glaucoma shunt surgeries.
4. Ophthalmology residents’ caseloads for nonphacoemulsification cataract surgery cases decreased from 3.8 cases to 2.2 cases.
5. For retinal photocoagulation cases, the average caseload also decreased from 59.6 cases to 45.5 cases.
6. Ophthalmology residents performed six filtering surgery cases in 2009, slightly up from 4.5 filtering surgery cases in 2015.
