6 facts on physician services; Spending totaled $677B in 2016

While physician services spending rallied in 2016, estimates suggest spending is likely to slow over the next nine years, Medscape reports.

Here are six facts:

1. In 2016, physician and clinical services use rallied 6.6 percent from the year prior, hitting $677 billion.

2. CMS expects this figure to drop to 5.9 percent in 2018 and then to 5.5 percent in 2025.

3. Economists say as employees pay more for healthcare services, use of physician services will decrease. Sean Keehan, a CMS economist, told Medscape Medical News, "People think twice about seeing the doctor if it's going to be much more than it were before."

4. In 2013, the number of physician office visits totaled 922.6 million.

5. Of these visits, 53.2 percent were to primary care physicians.

6. In 2014, nearly 83 percent of U.S. adults reported seeing a healthcare professional within the past year.
