5 trends affecting Nashville's healthcare industry

Healthcare is one driver of the Nashville economy, generating $7.3 billion in annual revenue for the city. The Tennessean examined how the ACA repeal would affect Nashville's healthcare businesses and what it could mean for the city going forward.

Here are five key trends from the report:

1. An ACA repeal that leaves previously insured people uninsured could hurt the city's healthcare industry. Without a clear replacement plan at the moment, companies are preparing for multiple scenarios.

2. Some believe major changes to healthcare wouldn't take effect until after the 2018 midterm elections, which would further elongate the fight over the ACA and extend uncertainty in the industry.

3. The focus on wellness — and injury and illness prevention — is forcing some in the healthcare industry to change their strategies. Providers have benefited from care given during the flu season and emergency room visits to "pay a good portion of their bills."

4. Healthcare companies have been waiting for a comprehensive policy on healthcare, but need to keep up with change and investor expectations as well as patient demands.

5. Treating episodes of care and chronic care management with less expensive methods like urgent care and telehealth are becoming more prominent.
