5 things to know about New Mexico's physician shortage

New Mexico is lacking physicians, based on a UNM Health Science Center report, according to KOAT 7 abc.

Here are five things to know:

1. The report found New Mexico has 1,908 primary care physicians.

2. Based on the state's population, the ratio tallies one primary care physician for every 1,099 residents.

3. The state's primary care physician numbers rank below the national benchmark by 145 physicians.

4. New Mexico also needs more nurses, as the state is below the national benchmark by 197 nurses.

5. So far, the state has created nine more primary care physician residency slots to boost the physician count.
