5 strategies for honest feedback

Honest feedback is an important part of any business relationships, but it can sometimes be difficult to obtain. Here are four tips for upping your chances of hearing what people really think, adapted from Forbes.

1. Be explicit about honesty. Let people know clearly and up front that you are looking for honest feedback, whether or not it is "nice."

2. Use future-framing. When asking for feedback, ask about how a task or idea ought to be executed in the future, rather than how it failed in the past.

3. Ask again. Give people multiple opportunities for feedback and make them specific. This increases your chances of hearing the real story.

4. Don't judge feedback. Instead, thank people for being honest and let them know the honest feedback is helpful.

5. Write down feedback. This helps you remember what is said and gives the person giving feedback the space to keep talking.
