5 statistics on ASC patient collections — Top challenges, payment methods & payment estimates

Here are five key points on challenges ambulatory surgery centers have with patient collections based on the Navicure "Ambulatory Surgery Center Patient Collections Survey: Key Survey Findings and Action Items."

1. The top collections challenge for ASCs is patients who were unable to pay, according to 32 percent of respondents. Thirty percent reported patients who are slow to pay as their top collections challenge.

2. There was around 12 percent who reported the top collections challenge was estimating patient financial responsibility and another 12 percent found the high cost of paper statements at the top challenge.

3. There are currently 81 percent of ASCs using credit/debit card terminal "swipes" for patient collections; 28 percent have online bill pay and 71 percent collect cash.

4. More than one-third — 38 percent — of the ASC respondents collect payments by mail and 41 percent take credit/debit card payments via phone.

5. Around 77 percent of the respondents "sometimes" or "never" estimate patient financial responsibility at the time of service. However, research shows around 52 percent of patients would be willing to pay at least something at the time of service if they had estimates provided.
