5 sample OR/procedure room cleaning checklists

As much of 75 percent of an operating room may not be sufficiently cleaned or disinfected. For example, the three best-cleaned items in an operating room — main door, main field light and telephone — are cleaned less than 35 percent of the time. However, routine disinfection is associated with significant reductions in surgical site and other patient infections.

Here are five sample disinfection and terminal cleaning checklists for ORs and procedure rooms.

1. Lakeland (Fla.) Surgical & Diagnostic Center shares this 10-item terminal cleaning checklist for ASC ORs.

2. Clorox Healthcare offers a generalized OR terminal cleaning checklist with individual items for environmental staff.

3. The Association for periOperative Registered Nurses offers a 22-item, customizable OR and environmental cleaning checklist for use in a variety of facilities.

4. The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston offers a sample environmental and OR cleaning checklist for patient rooms found to have housed a patient with an emerging infectious disease.

5. The ASC Quality Collaboration offers a checklist and development materials for environmental cleaning policy and procedure development.
