5 reasons more physicians should be on Twitter

Social media isn't a new concept any longer; the majority of Americans are using some type of social media platform on a regular basis, and American Academy of Family Physicians argues physicians should be too.

Here are five key reasons for physicians to join Twitter:

1. Uninformed voices dominate the conversation — People often post questions about an illness, condition or concept and people without experience or the scientific basis to answer those questions leave their two cents anyway. This can happen for chronic illnesses like back pain or a more politically charged issue, like vaccinations.

2. It can be used as an advocacy tool — When legislation is considered at the state or national level, social media becomes an outlet to grow support and educate those looking for more information on the topic. They are a way for physicians to reach a large audience and voice expert opinions backing their side of the debate to grow support for the legislation in the future.

3. You can make connections — Physicians can make professional connections on Twitter and grow those relationships further. Social media brings like-minded people together, according to the report, and they can bring important issues to the forefront.

4. Keep other people informed — Physicians and their staff can live tweet conferences and events to provide information to those who are unable to attend. This information flows easily and in real time. People are also more likely to check their social media than email or other news sources, especially as the event occurs.

5. Online conversations turn into real-life conversations — These conversations can connect you with people who have resources and are able to advocate for your position.
