5 notes on whether an app can assist patients in postoperative recovery

McGill University Health Centre's Steinberg-Bernstein Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery and SeamlessMD are currently working on a study to see if pre-loaded tablet devices can enhance a patient's recovery after surgery, reports mHealthNews.com.

Here are five key notes:

1. Patients are given a tablet with SeamlessMD's Enhanced Recovery After Surgery guidelines.

2. Hospital officials say the goal is to involve the patients in their postoperative recovery, which increases patient engagement and reduces the staff's daily charting and auditing, according to the report.

3. Liane Feldman, principal investigator for the study, and director of the Steinberg-Bernstein Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery and co-chair of the MUHC's surgical recovery team said, "The ERAS protocol and audit tool is resource-intensive and requires additional personnel."

4. The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons are financing the study.

5. The focus of the study is on whether a patient-facing app improves patient adherence to the ERAS care plan, according to the report.
