40% of residents rake in $200k+ of medical school debt — 12 statistics on resident debt

Sixty-eight percent of residents report immense medical school debt of $50,000 or more, according to Medscape's "Residents Salary & Debt Report 2016."

Medscape received answers from more than 1,800 residents in 25 specialties.

Here are 11 more statistics on resident debt.

  • Forty percent of residents report medical school debt of more than $200,000. 
  • Of the residents, 20 percent noted they have medical school debt between $100,000 and $200,000. 
  • Eight percent reported medical school debt between $50,000 and $99,999. 
  • Nine percent noted they have medical school debt less than $50,000. 
  • Only 22 percent of residents reported no medical school debt. 
  • Miniscule discrepancies existed between women and men in terms of medical school debt; 41 percent of male residents reported debt of more than $200,000 while 40 percent of female residents reported the same.
  • Twenty percent of male residents and 21 percent of female residents have debt between $100,000 and $200,000. 
  • Twenty-three percent of male residents have no debt compared to 21 percent of female residents.
