The following are statistics on wasted operating room resources from Sandy Nettrour, neurosurgery and orthopedic service line coordinator for Butler (Pa.) Health System as reported in Medcity News.

  • Approximately 6.7 percent of elective outpatient surgeries are cancelled.
  • One-third of cancelled elective surgeries are cancelled due to "patient reasons."
  • Each minute in an OR costs $15 to $20, leading to an OR cost per hour between $1,000 and $2,000, depending on the procedure.
  • On average, a patient telephone call to an orthopedic nurse, assuming an $81,000 orthopedic nurse salary, costs between $15 and $20 in staff time.
