4 notes on the positive effects of bariatric surgery on Type 2 Diabetes

Researchers found that among patients with Type 2 Diabetes, bariatric surgery with two years of adjunctive low-level lifestyle intervention resulted in greater disease remission than lifestyle intervention alone, according to a recent JAMA Surgery study.

Here are four key notes:

1. The study was conducted at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, treating 61 obese patients between 25 to 55 years old with Type 2 Diabetes.

2. Patients were randomized to an intensive lifestyle weight loss intervention for one year followed by a low-level lifestyle intervention for two years, or were given surgical treatment followed by two or three years of low-level lifestyle intervention.

3. Partial or complete diabetes remission was achieved by 40 percent of patients undergoingroux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, 29 percent of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, and no intensive lifestyle weight loss intervention participants.

4. Researchers also found the use of diabetes medications was reduced more in the surgical groups than the groups only undergoing lifestyle intervention, with 65 percent of RYGB, 33 percent of LAGB.
