4 key points on data breaches throughout the years

This year saw a record number of data breaches, with a total of 93 major attacks occurring in 2016, according to The Register.

Here are four key points:

1. Of all major HIPAA data breaches this year, hackers accounted for 31.42 percent.

2. In 2014, cyber attacks comprised 9.77 percent of the total major HIPAA data breaches, with this figure hitting 21.11 percent last year.

3. In 2015, Anthem Blue Cross had 78.7 million breached records and Premera Blue Cross had 11 million records breached.

4. Despite the number of attacks increasing by 63 percent in 2016, the number of breached records fell from 112 million in 2015 to 12 million this year.
