ASC Turnarounds: Ideas to Improve Performance
3 Reasons to Partner With a Management Company: Q&A With Buddy Bacon of Meridian Surgical Partners
Buddy Bacon is CEO of Meridian Surgical Partners.
Q: We have a successful, independent ASC. Is there any value in our considering a majority or minority partnership with a management company?
Buddy Bacon: Over the years, we have looked at many independent ASCs and found that the majority of them are very well managed. One way a management company can make an impact is through managed care contracting. Based upon the resources that a management company can bring to the table, it is in a better position to work with the payors to obtain a new contract or renegotiate an existing contract.
Secondly, some independent ASCs may need additional physician partners to sustain growth. Recruitment is a time-consuming effort for both the physicians and administrators. A management company can provide the expertise needed to take this burden off the physician partnership.
Third, the financial performance of independent ASCs is all across the board. A management company can provide a level of sophistication to several areas of an ASC to streamline operations as it relates to budgeting, expense management, purchasing and benchmarking.
