3 core qualities for ASC administrator excellence from SourceMedical's Ann Geier

Ann GeierAmbulatory surgery center administrative leadership is no mean feat. Ann Geier, MS, RN, CNOR, CASC, vice president, clinical informatics and surgery at SourceMedical, outlines three essential ASC administrator qualities and how to cultivate these characteristics.

1. Love of learning. As in nearly all fields, learning in the ASC industry is not a finite process. Healthcare, now more than ever, is rapidly changing and administrators must be receptive to instruction and new knowledge. "Work with a mentor; someone who believes in you and who will challenge you to do more than you ever thought you could do," says Ms. Geier. "Don't take constructive criticism personally, and use it as an opportunity to grow."

2. Flexibility. ASC administrators are subject to the internal and external stressors that are reshaping the way their centers are operated. From cost cutting strategies to lean staffing to CMS mandates and regulatory challenges, the need for flexibility is paramount. "The ideal administrator is now responsible for much more than in the past," says Ms. Geier. Juggling so many responsibilities requires flexibility in job roles. Allow staff members to step up and lead when they can. Outsource services that can no longer be adequately performed under the ASC's roof and constantly be open to opportunities to change for the better.

3. Ability to adapt. Hospitals are increasingly employing physicians, ASC reimbursement continues to drop and costs inexorably rise. The ASC administrators that successfully lead their centers through these uncertain times will be those that are best able to adapt, and quickly, to the constant changes and challenges.
