10 Statistics on the Ambulatory Surgery Center Operating Market

Here are 10 statistics on the ambulatory surgery center operating market, according to VMG Health's ValueDriver ASC Survey 2011. In compiling the survey, VMG spoke with leaders of the 20 of the largest ASC management and operating companies in the United States.

1. Forty-seven percent of respondents said they have seen stable same-center case volume trends at their ASCs. Twenty-seven percent said case volume is growing, and 27 percent said it is declining.

2. Asked to reveal trends that present the greatest challenge to case volume growth and retention, respondents said:

Impact of the economy on elective procedures: 36 percent

Competition from other ASCs and surgical facilities: 32 percent
Increase in hospital employment of physicians: 23 percent
Expected retirement of high-volume physicians: 9 percent

3. Sixty percent of ASC operators believed the growth in hospital employment had a moderate impact on their ASCs in 2010. Seven percent said the growth had a severe impact, and 33 percent said it had no impact.

4. Eighty-seven percent of respondents said hospital-employed physician growth will be an increasing threat in 2011. Thirteen percent said it will not.

5. Respondents said the most significant obstacle to physician recruitment was:

Growing shortage of physicians in many markets: 32 percent
Competition from other ASCs and surgical hospitals: 24 percent
Increased employment of physicians by hospitals: 24 percent
Unit/share cost is price-prohibitive for new buy-in: 20 percent

6. Fifty-three percent of ASC operators said their organization is considering closure of underperforming ASCs. Forty-seven percent said their organization was not.

7. Sixty-three percent of ASC operators said they were considering the merger of ASCs. Thirty-seven percent said they were not.

8. Respondents said the greatest challenges that will face the ASC industry over the next five years would be:

1.    Saturation of the ASC market – too many ASCs chasing a limited physician pool
2.    Further integration of physician groups with hospital systems
3.    Medicare and Managed Care reimbursement challenges
4.    Sluggish economic recovery
