10 Statistics on General Surgeon Compensation

Here are 10 statistics on general surgeon compensation based on the Medscape Surgeon Compensation Report: 2012 Results.

1. Average general surgeon compensation in 2011 was $265,000, a definite decrease from 2010.

2. Only around 9 percent of surgeons reported earning $500,000 or more in 2011, which had been around 13 percent in 2010.

3. 29 percent of general surgeons reported decreased compensation in 2011 from 2010, while 32 percent reported an increase. The rest said their compensation stayed the same.

4. Male general surgeons reported making 24 percent more than female general surgeons.

5. The western region of the United States, including California and Hawaii, reported highest average compensation for general surgeons, at $295,000.

6. General surgeons in the northwest region, including Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska, reported the lowest average compensation at $233,000.

7. General surgeons employed by healthcare organizations earned the highest average income compared to other settings, at $339,000.

8. Hospital-employed general surgeons reported compensation at $226,000.

9. General surgeons in solo practice reported $250,000 for average compensation.

10. 57 percent of general surgeons felt they were not fairly compensated, which is about the same as reported in 2010.
