10 leadership moves to transform workplace culture

Transforming company culture can be tricky but necessary. Here are 10 ways to get culture moving in the right direction, adapted from Forbes contributor Micah Solomon.

1. Create your "one-liner." Having a clear, memorable principle is key to structuring the rest of your organizational mission.

2. Hire according to your values. Employees who embody the heart of your mission will be your best bets for upholding it.

3. Pay employees fairly. Pay your people in accordance with what others in their position make and in accordance with what others in your company make.

4. Keep personnel policies customer-centric. If it helps a customer, it's okay, even if it's unorthodox.

5. Reinforce culture. A few simple minutes spent discussing how values fit into daily operation each morning add up to a lot of cultural reinforcement after all is said and done.

6. Coach employees. Managers owe employees value-adding coaching. Employees work to achieve personal growth, and managers can keep that growth in line with company values.

7. Discipline, when necessary.

8. Keep performance metrics in line with your mission. Ensure performance data collected is the data that matters to your operation and your customers. It's easy to collect any data. Collecting useful data is much harder.

9. Create standards with reasons behind them. The "why" of something is often as important as the "what."

10. Empower employees to do what is best. For the unexpected situations in life, employees must have the agency to manage themselves where normal rules don't apply.
