10 largest freestanding surgery centers: SK&A

SK&A released a new market report titled "Top 50 Free-Standing Surgery Centers" in November 2016.

The report includes 27,868 practitioners and more than 7,700 facilities. Orthopedic surgeons were the most commonly active at the top 100 surgery centers. The specialty breakdown as a percentage of the total surgeons was reported as:

• Orthopedic surgeon: 18 percent
• Family practitioner: 11 percent
• Obstetrician/gynecologist: 10 percent
• Ophthalmologist: 9 percent
• Cardiovascular disease: 8 percent
• Internist: 8 percent
• Anesthesiologist: 7 percent

Another 29 percent were other specialties.

The top 10 freestanding surgery centers by the number of physicians are:

1. Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Mountain View, Calif.: 194
2. Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Rafael, Calif.: 133
3. James E. Davis Ambulatory Surgical Center in Durham, N.C.: 113
4. Greater Houston Anesthesiology: 100
5. Billings (Mont.) Clinic Downtown: 96
6. Vancouver (Wash.) Clinic: 91
7. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in Houston: 89
8. Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Va.: 71
9. Aspen Surgery Center in Walnut Creek, Calif.: 69
10. Springfield (Ill.) Clinic: 68
