ASC Transactions & Valuation Issues
Trends in ASC Valuation: Q&A With Robert Zasa of ASD Management
Robert Zasa is a managing and founding partner with ASD Management, which specializes in development and management of new and existing ASCs.
Q: In your experience, are you seeing the overall valuation of ASCs increasing or decreasing? What factors are driving this trend?
Robert Zasa: ASC value has slightly decreased. Reimbursement has been a major driver, as we have seen a trend toward payors putting increasing restrictions on out-of-network payments on both professional and facility fee reimbursements to save them money.
Q: What is the single most important factor in assessing valuation in your opinion?
RZ: Specialties at the center and the reimbursement environment from payors in that area have had the biggest effect.
Q: What can ASCs looking to sell some or all of its assets do to address concerns raised by these reimbursement challenges?
RZ: There are several things an ASC can do. Increase profit by getting expenses reduced. Try to find a management co-partner with the best experience in that area. Try to recruit one or two more surgeons in attractive specialties, and educate them on the economic gain they can participate in when new cases are done.
