The Shrewsbury project, UMass Memorial opening surgical center: 10 things to know

UMass Memorial Health care proposed a project to build a new facility in a vacant lot in Shrewsbury, Mass.

Here are 10 things to know:

1. The proposed facility is estimated to cost $31 million.

2. The 40,000-square-foot-center will consist of nine operating rooms.

3.  Under a joint venture with Carewell Urgent Care Centers of Massachusetts, UMass Memorial is opening three walk-in urgent care clinics.

4. The new facility will be a joint venture with Shields Health Care Group of Quincy.  

5. Shields will employ 71 individuals with the majority being nurses and technicians.

6. The center is set to open in October 2016 with construction starting this year.

7. UMass Memorial logged 41,751 outpatient surgeries in Worcester during 2014, a 6 percent increase from the previous five years.

8. UMass posted a $9 million operating profit in the last six months of the current fiscal year, reversing a $21 million loss occurring during the same period a year prior.

9. Federal health programs for seniors and people with disabilities pay ambulatory care center with Medicare rates at around 58 percent of what it pays for the same care at hospital outpatient departments.

10. Accountable care organizations hope to reduce expenses so patients can continue to utilize ambulatory centers over hospitals.
