Orthopaedic Institute for Children breaks ground on ASC — 7 things to know

The Orthopaedic Institute for Children in Los Angeles is breaking ground on a new ambulatory surgery center this month.

Here are seven things to know:

1. The new surgery center is expected to cost $10 million and span 13,000 square feet.

2. The OIC will provide a full spectrum of pediatric musculoskeletal care at the outpatient surgery center.

3. This will be the first stand-alone facility specifically designed for outpatient orthopedic surgical care for children in the region.

4. There will be two operating rooms and six pre- and postsurgical suites. The facility will help reduce wait times for children who need orthopedic surgery.

5. Last year, OIC received 60,000 patient visits and placed more than 10,000 casts on children, many of whom were uninsured. OIC treats all patients, regardless of their ability to pay.

6. The surgery center is funded through a capital campaign and has currently raised $6 million of the anticipated $10 million needed to complete the center.

7. The ASC is expected to open in the spring of 2016.

"Having to wait for much-needed orthopedic surgery keeps kids sidelined and unable to lead active lives," said OIC President and CEO Anthony A. Scaduto. "With the new ASC, we will expand their access to care, and continue to provide them with best pediatric orthopedic treatment."
