Northwestern launches outpatient orthopedic, spine pavilion — 6 things to know

Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine launched the Center for Comprehensive Orthopaedic and Spine Care.

"Our goal is for the patient to see the right specialist at the right time — we'll have all the disciplines working together to provide the best patient care," said Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and the Edwin Warner Ryerson Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery Terrance Peabody, MD. "This model fosters ideal collaborative environment where a more comprehensive continuum of care helps ensure more accurate diagnoses, better patient outcomes and a streamlined process."

Here are six things to know about the center:

1. The 1 million-square-foot facility is an outpatient pavilion on the health system's downtown medical campus.

2. The new facility will offer orthopedic treatment, sports injury treatment and specialized neck, back and spine care.

3. There are imaging and operating room facilities in the center, which includes orthopedic surgeons, neurological surgeons, primary care sports medicine, physiatry, physical therapy and a dedicated radiologist.

4. For spine care, orthopedic and neurological surgeons practice in the same clinic and collaborate to offer enhanced patient care. They work together with the same images to develop a patient care plan.

5. The center's layout minimizes walking and standing required for patients with a unique layout designed specifically for orthopedic and spine patients.

6. There is education space for patients to prepare for total joint replacement surgery as well as a rehabilitation gym.
