Lawmakers, Organizations Call for Loosening of North Carolina CON Law

A number of organizations and lawmakers support the loosening or repeal of North Carolina's certificate of need laws, according to a Star News Online report.

The John Locke Foundation supports the removal of the CON laws, arguing that these laws fail to meet their purpose of lowering healthcare costs.

State Rep. Marilyn Avila (R-Wake) supports changing the laws to make the CON process easier to navigate and to allow for more ambulatory surgery centers to open in communities throughout North Carolina.

The Ambulatory Surgery Center Association has promised support to any legislative efforts to loosen CON regulations.

The North Carolina Hospital Association opposes changes to the current CON laws.
