Dr. Craig Amshel opens surgery center to expand healthcare access to Floridians — 4 key points

Florida surgeon Craig Amshel, MD, is building a new surgery center to provide Sun City Center residents outpatient services at a reduced cost, according to The SCC Observer.

Here are four key points:

1. Dr. Amshel practices at Absolute Surgical Specialists in Sun City Center. He plans to open the new surgery center in November.

2. The new building is 4,000 square feet and includes an additional 1,500 square feet of office space for lease or purchase.

3. Dr. Amshel will allow other physicians to use the procedure room for pain management, some orthopedics and plastic surgery procedures, among others.

4. Dr. Amshel said an outpatient colonoscopy will cost a total of $386 at the center, as opposed to the procedure costing almost $950 at the local hospital.

"I also wanted Sun City Center and other South Shore residents who need medical procedures to be able to do so at a more convenient location and greatly reduced cost," Dr. Amshel said. "Currently their closest option is South Bay Hospital or a surgery center in Brandon and Bradenton. Although 80 percent is covered [for] Medicare patients, that's not always the case [for those] with HMOs, PPOs, Medicare replacements and patients who self-pay."
