Cherokee Nation begins construction of 469k-sq-ft facility, featuring ASC — 4 things to know

Tahlequah, Oklahoma-based Cherokee Nation broke ground on a 469,000-square-foot health facility in Tahlequah.

Here's what you should know.

1. The center will feature 180 exam rooms, the tribe's first ASC, five surgical suites, two endoscopy suites as well as imaging, dental, ophthalmology and otolaryngology capabilities.

2. Cherokee officials project a 2019 completion date. It will be the largest Tribe-owned health center in the country.

3. The federal government and Cherokee Nation negotiated over the center for several years, before coming to an agreement recently.

4. Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker said, "This is a monumental day for the Cherokee Nation, and within just a couple of years, this state-of-the-art facility will be transformative in the lives of our citizens in northeast Oklahoma. The Cherokee Nation has broken barriers in healthcare throughout Indian Country for years, and with the addition of the new facility and new services that will come with this facility, we will be pioneers in health care recognized throughout the entire nation."
