8 Surgery Centers Recently Developed or Planned by Physician Groups

Here are eight surgery centers planned, opened or expanded by physician groups in the past two months, according to various news sources.

1. Tri-State Surgery Center (Washington, Pa.). Tri-State Surgery Center, a physician-owned outpatient surgery center affiliated with Washington Hospital, is expected to relocate within Washington and expand by 50 percent. The center, which opened in 2004, would be moving to a mixed-use development known as Meadows Landing once the sale of the lot is completed in the next several months. Groundbreaking for the project is planned for the spring.

2. Westside GI Surgery Center (New York, N.Y.). A group of physicians is opening Westside GI surgery center on Manhattan's far West Side. Westside GI has signed a 15-year lease for roughly 16,900 square feet. The new surgery center is made up of 13 gastroenterology and intestinal physicians, most of whom are affiliated with St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital.

3. Olympia Orthopaedic Associates Surgery Center (Olympia, Wash.). A new ambulatory surgery center for Olympia Orthopaedic Associates is scheduled for completion in August. The outpatient surgery center, which will feature six operating rooms, is included in a new 63,000-square-foot medical office building that will also include an imaging center and physical therapy suite.

4. Piedmont Outpatient Surgery Center (Piedmont, N.C.). Piedmont Ear Nose and Throat Associates has opened Piedmont Outpatient Surgery Center, a $4.1 million facility. Piedmont is participating in a five-year demonstration project to determine whether it's more cost-effective to allow physicians' groups to perform certain surgeries in-house rather than in a hospital or outpatient clinic. Piedmont officials expect the surgery center to handle about 2,770 surgeries annually, and Ronald Shealy, MD, expects the surgery center to perform some outpatient procedures at "roughly half" the cost of the hospital.

5. Arkansas Eye Surgery Center (Magnolia, Ark.). A new eye surgery center with two operating suites is being developed by Ivory Kinslow, MD, an ophthalmologist who owns the South Arkansas Eye Center in El Dorado. Construction on the ophthalmology surgery center has already begun and could take up to a year-and-a-half to complete. When it is open, the surgical center will primarily be used for cataract and other eye surgeries, and is expected to have the capability of performing laser eye surgery.

6. Billings VA Clinic (Billings, Mont.). The Billings VA clinic is set to expand, adding a same-day surgery center, audiology services, physical and occupational therapy, dental care and magnetic resonance imaging. Contracts are expected to be awarded this summer, with construction scheduled to finish in 2014. Once completed, the expanded facility will provide outpatient surgery and specialty service to around 11,000 Montana veterans and 10,000 Wyoming veterans. The expansion is also expected to create up to 70 jobs.

7. Kansas Gastroenterology and Kansas Endoscopy Surgery Center (Wichita, Kan.). A new ambulatory surgery center is coming to Wichita, Kan., later this year. The surgical center, to be completed by late August, is included in the expansion of a building acquired by Kansas Gastroenterology and Kansas Endoscopy. The office is moving to the site, renovating the building, which was formerly a restaurant, and expanding it.

8. West Morris Surgery Center (Succasunna, N.J.). West Morris Surgery Center recently opened as a project of several physicians. According to Bonnie Brady, administrator of the new facility, when the new group moved into the building, they found a variety of outdated but unused and sterile medical supplies and equipment. Three physicians affiliated with West Morris Surgery Center will visit the Philippines next January to provide much-needed medical services and donate the supplies.
