Here are 24 statistics on surgery center operating expenses as a percentage of net revenue based on the number of operating rooms, according to VMG Health's 2011 ASC Intellimarker Survey.

One to two ORs:
•    Employee salary and wages: 22.4 percent
•    Taxes and benefits: 4.3 percent
•    Occupancy costs: 7.7 percent
•    Medical and surgical: 19.4 percent
•    Other medical costs: 0.8 percent
•    Insurance: 0.7 percent
•    General and administrative: 22.8 percent
•    Total operating expenses: 66.5 percent

Three to four ORs:
•    Employee salary and wages: 22.3 percent
•    Taxes and benefits: 5.0 percent
•    Occupancy costs: 6.8 percent
•    Medical and surgical: 21.3 percent
•    Other medical costs: 1.0 percent
•    Insurance: 0.7 percent
•    General and administrative: 21.9 percent
•    Total operating expenses: 76.6 percent

More than four ORs:
•    Employee salary and wages: 22.0 percent
•    Taxes and benefits: 5.2 percent
•    Occupancy costs: 6.2 percent
•    Medical and surgical: 22.0 percent
•    Other medical costs: 0.9 percent
•    Insurance: 0.6 percent
•    General and administrative: 18.9 percent
•    Total operating expenses: 71.4 percent
