Zika virus impacts United Blood Services — 4 insights

The Zika virus is affecting the United Blood Services in Fargo, N.D., according to Valley News.

Here are four insights:

1. To date, this is the first local impact of the Zika virus.

2. Ben Prather, Cass County Vector control director said the cold weather will keep Zika out of the area for some time, but when the summer months come, people can take precautions to avoid providing breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that carry the virus.

3. United Blood Services Regional Director, Jennifer Bredahl, said if somebody traveled to Mexico, the Caribbean, South or Central America in the last 28 days, then they should not donate blood until the 29th day at least.

4. While the cold is keeping Zika at bay, it's also the cause for UBS missing out on donations as people tend to travel south to escape the winter temperatures.
