A study published by JAMA Surgery examined the long-term effects of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy on obesity-related comorbidities.
Here are five insights:
1. Data was collected from all patients at a university hospital undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies performed by the same team between April 2006 and February 2013.
2. A total of 443 procedures were performed. Data was also collected at one, three and five years of follow-up.
3. The percentage of excess weight loss was 76.8 percent at the first year of follow up, 69.7 percent at the third year and 56.1 percent at the fifth year of follow up.
4. Changes in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level and triglyceride level were significant compared with preoperative and postoperative measurements.
5. Hypertriglyceridemia was the only comorbidity whose remission rates at one year of follow-up correlated with percentage of excess weight loss.
