WebMD and Medscape investigate health issues for children in school: 6 important notes

WebMD and Medscape surveyed possible health issues children, parents and physicians will face in the upcoming school year.

Here are six important notes:

1. The Medscape Vaccine Acceptance Report and WebMD Stress in Children Survey look at parental attitudes toward vaccines and missed signs of stress in children.

2. The Medscape survey found 42 percent of clinicians reported parents were more accepting of immunizations after the measles outbreak.

3. About 25 percent reported parents were more accepting of vaccinations as schools required the immunizations.

4. About 60 percent of HCPs reported parents were still concerned about a connection between immunizations and autism.

5. The WebMD survey found parents often don't notice signs of stress in their kids: 54 percent of parents said their children's stress was moderate.

6. Although 60 percent of parents said a major negative life event affected their family in the past year, 53 percent of parents said their children's stress was due to schoolwork.

"These surveys are particularly timely and important as parents and children prepare for the new school year," said Michael Smith, MD, chief medical editor of WebMD. "They provide valuable perspective on areas that affect the physical and emotional lives of children."
