Threat of West Nile in New York City: 5 facts to note

New York health authorities are treating water basins after detecting mosquitoes with West Nile in New York City, according to Water Online.

Here are five notes:

1. Health authorities found infected mosquitoes in the Glen Oaks neighborhood in Queens and New Dorp Beach on Staten Island.

2. The officials are working to treat water-catching basins in the infected areas.

3. No human cases have been reported this year.

4. Weather conditions are a crucial factor in the movement of mosquitoes carrying the virus. Residents are advised not to over-water their lawns as to limit the pools of standing water.

5. In 2011, approximately 700 New York residents received citations for failing to properly treat water in their yard.
