The Joint Commission reports 47 patient falls, 52 unintended retained foreign objects in 2016 — 10 statistics on sentinel events

In the second quarter of 2016, The Joint Commission reviewed 439 sentinel events.

Here are nine more statistics on sentinel events and their outcomes:

1. There have been 5,394 patient deaths this quarter.

2. In the second quarter, sentinel events impacted nearly 9,922 patients.

3. The Joint Commission reviewed 47 instances of wrong-site, wrong-patient or wrong-procedure cases.

4. This quarter, there have been 52 cases of an unintended retention of a foreign body.

5. There have been 2,624 cases of unexpected additional care.

6. Ninety-four patients have suffered permanent harm and 315 patients have suffered temporary harm.

7. There has been one case of an infection-related event.

8. The Joint Commission reviewed 14 medical error cases.

9. For the full year of 2015, The Joint Commission reviewed 936 sentinel events.
