Surveillance system decreases number of HAIs: 5 notes

Johannesburg, South Africa-based Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre saw decreased hospital-acquired infections following the implementation of an infection prevention and control system, according to BusinessDay.

Here are five notes:

1. The hospital established a unit-specific surveillance system in 2010, which monitors devices linked to infections.

2. The system notices infections immediately, making it easier to maintain them before spreading.

3. The intensive care unit saw a 42 percent decrease in ventilator-associated pneumonias over the duration of three years.

4. The ICU also saw a 100 percent decrease in central-line associated bloodstream infections over the duration of three years.

5. Most hospitals aren't intimately aware of their hospital-acquired infections, so the surveillance system allows needed insight.
