Surgeons with high record of patient complaints prone to errors: 3 things to know

Surgeons that have a high record of patient complaints are more likely to make surgical mistakes, UPI reports.

Here are three things to know:

1. Researchers found surgeons with many patient complaints had almost 14 percent more complications in the month following surgery than surgeons who had few patient complications. The study cited complications including surgical-site infections, pneumonia, kidney conditions, stroke, heart problems, blood clots, sepsis and urinary tract infections.

2. William Cooper, MD, lead study author, noted surgeons who exhibit rudeness and disrespect are more likely to treat other medical personnel in a poor manner, which could impede quality patient care. If a surgeon treats staff poorly, they will be less likely to speak up or work well with that individual.

3. The study highlights the need to analyze patient and family reports detailing a surgeon's unprofessional behavior as detecting these individuals could help reduce complication rates.
