Superbug-like fungus infects erupting on East coast: 5 points

Candida auris is infecting patients in hospitals throughout the United States, according to abc 6.

Here are five points:

1. CDC official Paige Armstrong, MD, said the fungus is emulating a superbug.

2. Newborns and elderly are particularly susceptible to infection and providers often diagnose patients with the fungus once they have been in a facility for a handful of weeks.

3. New York health officials confirmed 44 cases in the state. Of these patients, 17 died. However, offices note every patient that died had other infections and illnesses and therefore the fungus may not be the cause of death.

4. The CDC reported 15 cases in New Jersey as well as four in Illinois.

5. Indiana, Maryland and Massachusetts each have one confirmed case.
