Sen. Joe Manchin speaks out on daughter's behalf, claims legislators fail to focus on solution — 4 things to know

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) defended his daughter and Mylan CEO Heather Bresch after she faced questions from heated lawmakers concerning her company's huge profits, according to The Hill.

Here are four things to know:

1. Sen. Manchin said when legislators grilled Ms. Bresch, they failed to look at ways to solve the problem of rising prediction drug prices. He told CNN, "We can criticize and beat the living crap out of anyone we want to, and that was proven yesterday. But does that solve the problem? Do they really want to solve the problem?"

2. During the congressional hearing, lawmakers asked Ms. Bresch about her $19 million salary and EpiPen's large price increase.

3. Sen. Manchin said legislators could have been "more constructive" during the hearing and the emphasis on Ms. Bresch's salary was "pretty sensational."

4. Many questioned Ms. Bresch's familial relation to Sen. Manchin when talks stirred about a potential congressional hearing. One senator calling for the executive's testimony claims her family connection will not impact the Senate hearing. Rather, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said the Senate would focus on whether Mylan acted immorally with families paying erroneous prices for a life-saving drug that combats allergies.
