Research findings revealed a poster intervention tool coupled with easily accessible hand sanitizers could improve hand hygiene performance in hospital cafeterias, according to a study published in the American Journal of Infection Control.
Over a five-week observation period, a poster and hand sanitizer unit was implemented in a hospital cafeteria. Researchers measured hand hygiene attempts as the main outcome. Results showed 5,551 participants were observed, and overall hand hygiene frequency was 4.79 percent. Hygiene attempts occurred more frequently by healthcare workers than hospital visitors and females than males.
Notably, hygiene attempts occurred more frequently after implementing the poster than baseline. Researchers pointed out the improvement was due to an increase in hand hygiene frequency among visitors rather than healthcare workers.
