Personal healthcare spending on diabetes hit $101.4B in 2013 — 5 facts to note

Diabetes became one of the costliest and fastest growing issues in the United States, after it topped a list of the nation's costliest chronic conditions, The Sacramento Bee reports.

Here are five facts to note:

1. In 2013, personal healthcare spending on diabetes totaled $101.4 billion.

2. Compared to those without the disease, the average medical expenditures for people with diabetes are 2.3 times higher.

3. Over the past two decades, insulin's cost has increased by triple-digit percentages.

4. By 2050, the CDC projects nearly 33 percent of Americans will have diabetes.

5. Of U.S. adults, almost 30 million had diabetes in 2012 and another 86 million Americans had prediabetes.
