Perioperative guideline released for optimal management of geriatric patients — 5 things to know

The American College of Surgeons National Quality Improvement Program and the American Geriatric Society's Geriatrics-for-Specialists Initiative released a new perioperative guideline for older adult optimal care.

Here are five things to know:

1. The new guideline is supported by The John A. Hartford Foundation.

2. More than 40 million older adults currently live in the United States today, with that number expected to nearly double to 89 million by 2050.

3. The new guideline address the perioperative care of all surgical patients 65-years-old and older as defined by Medicare regulations.

4. The new guideline is organized into three sections:

  • Immediate preoperative management
  • Intraoperative management
  • Postoperative management

5. Titled "Optimal Perioperative Management of the Geriatric Patient: A Best Practices Guideline," the new guideline has been published online on the Journal of the American College of Surgeons website and will appear in the print edition of JACS and the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society later this year.
