The CatheterOut website offers two free toolkits for implementing a program to reduce catheter use and catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
Researchers from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor conducted extensive research and interviews with stakeholders on CAUTI prevention. They collated their findings in a toolkit that provides background information as well as practical tools — including fliers, pocket cards, data collection tools and procedural steps — to promote appropriate catheter use.
In addition, the researchers published a detailed protocol for nurse-initiated removal of unnecessary catheters in non-intensive care units in November 2010. The protocol toolkit, which was funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, is based on a study performed at St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit. While the document includes some of the same tools as the broader toolkit, it also includes different resources, such as presentation templates and sample letters to nurse managers.
