MRSA infects Washington school — 5 key facts

St. Albans, a private school in Washington, has encountered a MRSA outbreak, according to USA Today.

Here are five facts on MRSA infections.

1.. Two of the St. Albans' football players have contracted skin infections caused by MRSA.

2. The school sterilized and disinfected lockers, locker rooms and buses with "industry-standard, hospital-grade cleaning supplies."

3. MRSA infections are not uncommon in high schools, but they are often not reported. States do not mandate every individual case of "community-acquired" skin infections to be reported.

4. The CDC reports two in every 100 people carry MRSA, but many of them are not infected.

5. Many experts advocate for more comprehensive, uniform reporting requirements for MRSA because increased transparency leads to better tracking of the problem.
