Medication errors often do not have serious repercussions — 5 things to know

Australian researchers found medication errors, although relatively common, may not have a serious impact on residents in skilled care settings, according to McKnight's.

The researchers analyzed relevant studies published between 2000 and 2015.

Here are five things to know:

1. Medication errors involved between 16 percent and 27 percent of residents in the studies that researchers analyzed.

2. Providers prescribed 75 percent of residents at least one potentially inappropriate medication.

3. Between 13 percent and 31 percent of residents had transfer-related medication errors.

4. Despite these findings, researchers noted serious impacts of medication errors occurred less than 1 percent of the time.

5. The researchers concluded a team-based approach could limit such medication errors.
