Majority Whip Steve Scalise undergoes surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center after contracting infection

Washington, D.C.-based MedStar Washington Hospital Center admitted Majority Whip Steve Scalise into the intensive care unit after the representative contracted an infection, according to The New York Times.

Here's what you should note:

1. The hospital has treated Mr. Scalise for the last several weeks after the official was wounded following a shooting that ensued on June 14. James T. Hodgkinson opened fire on a baseball practice field where the Republican congressional baseball team was playing.

2. In a statement released July 6, MedStar did not say the type of infection or the specific procedure Mr. Scalise underwent.

3. Mr. Scalise had undergone at least three operations over a three-week period to repair broken bones and adnominal injuries.

4. In the statement, the hospital listed Mr. Scalise's condition as serious, according to abc news.
