LifePoint Health selected to continue improvements in patient safety: 5 observations

LifePoint Health is among 17 hospital associations and health systems to continue reducing preventable hospital-acquired conditions, through Partnership for Patients.

Here are five observations:

1. Started in 2011, the Partnership for Patients initiative is a public-private collaboration to reduce preventable hospital-acquired conditions by 40 percent and 30-day readmissions by 20 percent.

2. LifePoint will participate in the second round of Hospital Engagement Networks.

3. Hospital Engagement Networks participants will conduct training programs, help hospitals meet quality measurement goals and improve the system to track hospital progress in meeting Partnership for Patients' quality improvement goals.

4. Partnership for Patients, accountable care organizations and quality improvement organizations among other initiatives, have resulted in an 8 percent drop in hospital readmission in Medicare between January 2012 and December 2013.

5. These patient-safety focused initiatives have also played a part in the 17 percent decline in hospital-acquired conditions between 2010 and 2013.

"We have made significant progress in keeping patients safe and we are focused on accelerating improvement efforts through collaboration and reliable implementation of best practices," said Patrick Conway, MD, CMS acting principal deputy administrator and chief medical officer.
