High-risk surgery: Survival rates vary widely by hospital

A new Leapfrog Group study has found that the survival rate for high-risk surgeries is impacted by the hospital the procedures are performed at, according to an NJSPOTLIGHT report.

The study authors examined abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve replacement, pancreas removal and esophagus removal performed at various New Jersey hospitals. The authors found that survival rates varied widely amongst the hospitals.

The study authors concluded that such data could be useful when determining where to have surgery, but cautioned that this was a state-wide study, rather than national. Additionally, the authors also suggested that the surgeon performing the procedure is an important factor, according to the report.
