HHS' new report on carcinogens adds 7 substances: 5 things to know

HHS released the 14th report on carcinogens, which includes seven new substances, according tohere.

Here are five things to know:

1. The chemical trichloroethylene as well as the metallic element cobalt and cobalt compounds releasing cobalt ions in vivo have been included in the list.

2. Additionally, HHS added these five viruses, which have been connected to more than 20 types of cancer in humans:

• Human immunodeficiency virus type 1
• Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1
• Epstein-Barr virus
• Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus
• Merkel cell polyomavirus

3. The Report on Carcinogens is congressionally mandated.

4. The report shed light on the importance of prevention strategies to decrease infections that could potentially result in cancer.

5. Report listings of substances do not guarantee cancer; rather they represent a cancer hazard.
